Outline Tutorial

Description

While making the outline for my cat sprite (which i'll upload soon) i decided so make a tutorial. I love outlines around peices, so i decdeded what to make it about.

This is aimed for those people who just use the 'skin' of photoshop, rather than those great deep experts.

(I'd also reccomend against putting outlines around things that are cut of, it's not bad enough to be included, but, bleh.)

Example of objects i think would look good with an outline

Example of art i don't think would look good with an outline

Anyway, first time with a tutorial, how is it?

Ah, neat tutorial you have here. I took a moment to look into the images you have in your description, but with all due respect, I'd like to disagree with your very first statement in your tutorial that says outlines make images look professional...

Outlining has a very careful definition and the mainstream "outlining" that most people know is quite frankly frowned upon in the professional field because they make the image flat, they destroy the illusion of form and volume. (However in some cases thick outlines and flat images are done on purpose for a visual style, most often in television shows, such as Total Drama, Danny Phantom, Fairly Odd Parents, Kick Buttowski, and Dexter's Laboratory).

Outlining is a difficult thing to get over ^^; It took me a year after finishing my life drawing class to figure out just what my instructor meant by 'no outlining' and to 'draw through' the figure. This last March was when I finally figured it out, so don't think you're the only one.
